Crosswalk makes it easier to transition into ICD-10
How can ClinicMind make a difference in the ICD-10 changeover?
Alex bent over the golden retriever in the tub, sudsing her fur and ignoring her accusing expression. His wife handed him a bucket full of water.
“Don’t you love the way she looks at you, like she’s forgiving you for the way you torture her, and she wants you to know it?” said Laura, holding a towel ready to receive the dog.
“She needed that bath,” Alex said. He and Laura both tried to rub the dog dry, but that didn’t keep her from shaking vigorously. “Now we’re going to need baths!”
“It’s worth it,” said Laura, gathering the towels into the hamper. “She was beginning to get downright stinky.”
Alex agreed. “Speaking of things that stink, you know how you told me to take a child’s eye view of my problems with the insurance reporting code changes?”
“Well, I’ve been talking with the people at ClinicMind about the issue.”
“ClinicMind? That’s the new practice management software, right?”
“Exactly. And they have a solution for the code changes that made me think of what you said. They have what they call their three magnets: assessment, documentation, implementation.”
“Remember, part of the problem was the complexity. But their system groups the codes into clusters, so we can start in roughly the right place and drill down to just what we need.”
“In the software?”
“Right on the billing screen. We can upgrade to the ICD-10 codes and see both the current and the new codes right there on the screen. It enables a crosswalk –”
“A crosswalk is definitely a child’s eye view,” Laura teased. As the owner of a preschool, she knew all about crosswalks.
“That just means a way of getting from the old code to the right new code,” Alex smiled. “With both sets on the screen and the ability to drill down to specifics and choose, it’ll be much easier than if we had to sort through all 70,000 of the new codes and find the right one.”
“That makes sense. But how they can work with both? As I recall, that was the other big issue: everything has to change on October 1st. You don’t get time to transition.”
“The bills have to change on the day, but with this system, my team get to transition and learn between now and then. ClinicMind helps with training, so that by the time we have to change the codes, we’re ready.”
“So your software sort of holds your hand as you cross the street from the old codes to the new ones!”
“Exactly,” Alex laughed.
